What an amazing city! A Cidade Maravilhosa - "The Marvelous City" The largest tropical city on the ocean in the world! The most beautiful urban/nature views in the world from Corcovado. We felt safe the entire week we stayed in Ipanema/Leblon, although we did not venture into the rest of the city. It was amazing to walk along the busy/dense streets of Ipanema and then end up on the tropical beach opening up to the Atlantic. Praia de Ipanema is the most beautiful urban beach in the world! I went there concerned about safety of my possessions, but keeping them concealed or in the hotel made my stay exciting. January was peak holiday season so hotels were ultra expensive. I sat on the beach with 3,500 people on the 31st Dec dressed in white holding a candle - an awesome experience indeed. I loved the markets, the jewelry sales from the mines, the music and dancing on the street, the samba, the smiling people, and the g-strings on all ages on the beach, and the easy friendliness. Fantastic town, with fantastic nature and lifestyle. Very dangerous, it's better not to show that you are a tourist! We always enjoy going around with a car, it's necessary to see places not too touristic. Places I love: Ipanema, Botafogo, downtown Rio (but during the daytime!!! and on Saturday mornings when there is a big market!), praca Generale Osorio on Sunday mornings, Barra de Tijuca and all its shopping centres and beaches.
